4 Managerial Skills Every New Franchisee Needs | iFixandRepair

Between setting up your storefront and hiring your first employee, there’s a lot that goes into opening up your new franchise. As you get your location staffed and ready for business, you have the perfect opportunity to shine as a manager and create a fantastic team dynamic.

If you’re curious about what managerial skills you’ll need to hit the ground running, we’ve compiled a list of the most important things:

Have confidence. You’ve probably heard all your life that confidence is key—it really is! Believing in yourself is the first step to sound leadership. This doesn’t mean ignoring your faults or overhyping your strengths, but it does mean that you should have confidence in your ability to grow as a leader and as a franchise owner.

Invest in your employees. The employee-manager relationship is an important one and something you’ll have to spend a lot of time developing for successful operations. Whether you have a part- or full-time staff (or a mix of both!), keeping them happy, engaged and willing to grow will make everything go more smoothly.

Share responsibilities. Speaking of investing in your employees, remember to utilize their skill sets, too! There’s no need to carry everything on your own shoulders—become a master of delegating instead. Not only will this help take some of the pressure off of you in the short-term, but in the long-term, it will allow employees to thrive and utilize their interests to invest in the business instead of simply operating the cash register.

Keep in touch. Franchisees are in a unique position, and it’s important that you keep up frequent communications to ensure you’re prioritizing the right things. Keep in touch with your franchisor to make sure you know where the business is going, but also be sure to keep in touch with your staff to understand the day-to-day pressure points. This middle-of-the-road communication strategy will help you keep a pulse on everything that’s going on and prevent tunnel vision down the road.
